Winner: Central California Power

Working with local developers Castle and Cooke and Tejon Ranch, environmental consultant WZI, and our Perkins / CAT distributor Southwest Products, Central California Power replaced 28 high-emission diesel engines with new fuel-efficient, lower-emission engines in 2006.  These re-powers reduced emissions by 642 tons of NOx and 32 tons of PM10.  Central California Power is continuing the re-powers with over 70 engines through May 2007.

The project, which began about three years ago, benefits all involved, said Rod Headley, Central California Power owner and president. His company gets business, developers offset harmful emissions created by new projects, customers get new engines that save them money and all people living in the valley benefit from the cleaner air that results.

Other nominees:Bakersfield Bluffs & Open Space Committee -- Michelle Beck and Craig Smith; Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Bike Bakersfield;Keep Bakersfield Beautiful; Kern River Corridor Endowment; Supervisor Mike Maggard --The Bakersfield Planning Department
