Situation:
  • Energy is a large percentage of operating costs
  • Competitive industry with narrow profit margins
  • Significant refrigeration needs
  • Outages have significant consequences (lost sales and spoiled products)
  • Limited available space
Solution: Pre-fabricated system with 2 x 200 cogen units + 110 Ton absorption chiller

Grocers face a challenging situation. Profit margins are incredibly tight, many items have a very short shelf life, and some items will be damaged if refrigeration is lost for even a short period of time. The addition of increasing energy costs and the threat of rolling blackouts makes it even more challenging to improve profits.

A seemingly very attractive situation for onsite cogeneration is confronted with the challenge of finding space for the equipment given limited space availability. Hess Microgen solved this problem by placing our packaged cogeneration units and related equipment, including an absorption chiller, associated pumps, and all other ancillary equipment, on a prefabricated skid that could be installed above the delivery bay. By assembling the skid in our factory, Hess Microgen is able to deliver a nearly complete cogeneration system to the site, resulting in a very simple installation process.

The system generates 400 kW of prime power, or nearly 85% of the facility's needs, and 110 Tons of equivalent chilling offset to greatly offload the refrigeration system. Because the chilling offset lowers the facility's overall demand, the system's ability to provide 440 kW of emergency power is enough to keep the entire facility up and running in the event of a blackout. The result is significant savings from lower energy costs and avoiding the need to install backup power generation equipment. Further benefits would result from continued operations during a utility blackout or environmental disaster.

Hess Microgen's pre-fabricated system concept is indicative of the innovation and expertise of our team. While grocers are excellent candidates for this system, it can be adapted for many other uses, from grocer-like applications such as "big box" retail to any situation where space is constrained or simplified installation is desired.
