Can You Benefit?

Your business can benefit from onsite cogeneration if there is value in any combination of the following attributes:
  • Lower Electricity Costs
  • Lower Thermal Energy Costs (Heating and/or Cooling)
  • Increased Power Reliability
  • Increased Power Quality
All businesses can benefit from lower operating costs, and most can benefit from increased energy reliability and cleaner power. In order to benefit from Hess Microgen's / CCDS onsite cogeneration systems, your business needs to meet certain electrical and thermal energy requirements.

Typically, Hess Microgen's / CCDS onsite cogeneration is practical for businesses that have at least the following electrical loads:
  • 200 kW of electrical demand or greater and
  • 120,000 kWh of electrical consumption per month (1,440,000 kWh per year) or greater and have heating and/or cooling needs that meet at least one of the following (or through combination a portion of each):
  • 12,000 Therms of heating per month (60,000 Therms per year) or greater and/or
  • 55 Tons of chilling or greater
Thermal heat needs such as domestic hot water, heating, laundry, pool heating, process heating, and steam, etc., and cooling needs such as chilled water, brine, refrigeration, etc., and many other similar type heating or cooling needs, are all considered attractive cogeneration applications.

Onsite cogeneration economics are in part dependent on what is known as the "Spark Spread" - the difference between the cost of purchasing electricity from the utility and the price of the cogeneration fuel (natural gas, propane, etc.). Other important considerations include the cost of interruption or damage to your business because of power outages or dirty power, both of which can be addressed by Hess Microgen / CCDS systems. Therefore, the higher the utility electricity price relative to the cost of fuel, and the greater the value placed on reliable, clean power, the more economically attractive onsite cogeneration becomes (note Hess Microgen / CCDS can often procure lower cost gas than your business currently obtains).
