Highrise
Residential

Situation:
  • Multiple buildings, each with 220 apartments
  • High energy costs increasing cost of living
  • Limited space available to effect changes in the facility
Solution: 1 x 200 Cogen unit per building

Residential tenants desire reasonable rates for living expenses and do not worry about their electricity except when it is expensive or when it goes out. At all other times, the more invisible their power is, the better. Hess Microgen units are small enough that they could be located in the basement and quiet enough that residents do not notice their operation. Importantly, they power over 60% of each facility's electricity and provide a significant portion of the hot water needs, resulting in savings of 30% over previous utility costs. These savings come with no out-of-pocket expenses to the building owners or the tenants since Hess Microgen, through its Value Share program, paid for all equipment, engineering, installation, and permitting costs and covers all operating and maintenance expenses, including fuel.

Residential high-rise facilities are good candidates for cogeneration because electric loads are predictable and hot water needs are typically a large percent of total energy costs. The hot water usage allows a cogeneration system to efficiently utilize its thermal energy. Hess Microgen can provide integration into residential facilities without disruption to the existing electric service.

Commercial high-rise buildings are often good candidates for similar reasons, especially when cooling needs can be addressed via absorption chilling from the cogen system.
